# How to find the determinant of a matrix in Geogebra

In this lesson I'll explain how to calculate the determinant of a matrix using Geogebra.

**What is the determinant of a matrix?** It is a number (scalar value) that describes the algebraic properties of a square matrix.

Make a square matrix.

For example, a 3x3 matrix.

**How to create a matrix on Geogebra?** If you don't know how to do, read our tutorial and then come back to this page.

Now type the function **Determinant()** and put the name of the array between the round brackets. Then press enter.

Geogebra calculates and displays the determinant of the matrix.

In this case the determinant is -65.

**Note**. You can only calculate the determinant on matrices that have the same number of rows and columns (square matrices). You cannot calculate it on rectangular matrices.
